1. Be Focused on the Customer
Never lose sight of your main objective which is to know your customer wants and how to give it to them. Part of your job is making sure that you are creating long lasting, loyal customers. If you fail them, they will go to your competitor.
2. Always be thinking ahead
Although it is important to keep in mind what is happening today you must also think about what is coming. You need to be aware of any trends that are beginning to emerge and start planning for those. That means understanding what your customers will want in six months, one year, etc.
3. Work with a team
Having the ability to collaborate with the team of other professionals is important. There several areas that a marketing professional can get the necessary research from, for example, data analytics. A marketing professional must be able to work with other professionals to be successful.
4. Have the ability to recover from failure
No one in any field is perfect, and when it comes to marketing there is sometimes more failure than success. The important skill here is the ability to be able to recover from that failure and figure out what went wrong. Is also important to be able to own up to the failure.
5. Measure the data
The data doesn’t lie, so keeping track of that data is extremely important. As the marketing professional gains more data he or she will be able to determine what is working and what is not. Once the person has that knowledge they are able to make adjustments accordingly.
6. Adjust as necessary
A marketing professional must be willing to handle constant change. A marketer cannot stay in the box. He or she must be willing to try new things and find new angles to grab the attention of the consumer. One positive aspect to this piece is that one failure will not get a marketer fired, so long as he or she can come up with a better idea next time.
7. Continual growth
Because the marketing world constantly changes there is no manual that can be followed. That means a marketer must learn as he or she goes and try to learn faster than their competitors. Professional marketers must be willing to learn new things all the time, and never be close minded about an idea.
8. Get creative
Successful marketers are able to take any product, old or new, and approach it with fresh new ideas. A good marketer takes an old idea and changes it, but a great marketer starts from scratch and comes up with an amazing idea.
